Time to talk about:

Tanglers, Toys & Recycling Right

NO TANGLERS

Around the holidays, "tanglers" like Christmas string lights, old toys,
and old decorations create a huge problem at recycling sorting facilities.

Hoses, cords, and light strings get caught in the machinery and can take hours of hazardous work to fix.

from Take Care of Texas.

This blog post from The Recycling Partnership explains in simple language why 'Tanglers' are a problem.

NO TOYS or BATTERIES

Toys and holiday decorations are often made of different types of plastic and can't be recycled at a typical facility. If possible, they should be donated or thrown away — not put in recycling.

Batteries are not recyclable at a typical facility and are a major hazard if put in with other recyclables.

Batteries can be recycled for free by dropping them off at a Call2Recycle partner location.

Recycle right

"Contamination" — anything in the recycling stream that doesn't belong there — is still the #1 barrier to recycling programs in Texas and can dramatically increase the cost of recycling for your community.

Contamination is caused by confusion about what is recyclable and how.

How does contamination hurt recycling?

Items like clothing, shoes, and broken toys slow the whole process down.

Items like hoses, cords, batteries, and propane tanks, can actually damage machinery or start a fire.

Food waste and liquids can ruin the value of recyclables like paper, cardboard and metals.

How to help:

Check the signs every time, and make sure you know what you can throw
in the recycling bin before you throw it.
