Tanglers, Toys & Recycling Right

“Contamination” — anything in the recycling stream that doesn’t belong there — is still the #1 barrier to recycling programs in Texas and can dramatically increase the cost of recycling for your community.

Contamination is caused by confusion about what is recyclable and how.

Around the holidays, “tanglers” like Christmas string lights, old toys, and old decorations create a huge problem at recycling sorting facilities. They should be donated or thrown away.

Hoses, cords, and light strings get caught in the machinery and can take hours of hazardous work to fix.

Batteries are not recyclable at a typical facility and are a major hazard if put in with other recyclables.
